Monir Goran grew up in Iraq listening to music as diverse as ABBA and Beethoven. In his childhood, he developed an interest for Kurdish music, and in particular the guitar and the Oud. Under Saddam Hussein’s regime, Goran fled from Iraq to eventually settle in The Netherlands in the late nineties. The Monir Goran Trio – composed of Ako Taher, Maya Sjoerdsma and himself – explores the uncharted territory between music from Goran’s own heritage and the works of French composer Eric Satie.
